Composite decks and railings are manufactured in many colors and styles.  Composites are a combination of plastic and wood fibers.  They vary in type of plastic, type of wood and the amount of each in the product.  Every product has pros and cons for it's own composition.

In general, the more wood fibers the softer the product.  Pros, more flexible, less prone to breaking in cold weather, less expansion and contraction, feels more like real wood and "softer" to walk on.  Cons, fades faster and can sag over time.

Products with little or no wood fibers fade less, can be pressure washed, are less prone to stains and mildew but can become brittle when cold and are "harder" when walking on them barefooted.

We have included links to some of the different manufactures of low maintenance decking products.

Cedar is a good product for those who enjoy the natural beauty of real wood.  A cedar deck will need to be stained a few weeks after constructed and re-stained every two to three years.  Cedar is a soft, stable, decay resistant wood that will last 15 years or longer if properly maintained.  We recommend a good quality oil based stain.  You can expect some shrinkage and fading over time.

Treated lumber is an economical choice for customers who desire to let their deck weather to a natural silver gray color with little maintenance.  However with treated lumber you can expect considerable shrinkage and splitting of deck boards and railing components.  Treated decks usually last 10 to 15 years and are usually replaced because many boards and railings have cracked and split from the ends of the boards causing loose railings and splinters.  The integrity of most boards will be quite good with the exception of the ends.
